IIntensive marine and brackish water shrimp farms commonly use large quantities of zeolites in ponds with the aim of removing ammonia through ion exchange, providing physical cover over sediments to prevent leaching of metabolites into the water column, removing suspended solids, and improving water color and diatom blooms. Zeolites have the capacity to remove ammonia and other nutrients/ metabolites from fresh waters by ion exchange and absorption. Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral, known for its adsorptive properties. Zeolites are a group of crystalline microporous aluminosilicates minerals with chemically neutral basis formed in a honeycomb like structure. Zeolites have a tremendous value and are widely being used in aquaculture industry for improving the quality of water and the feed quality to reduce the negative environmental impacts on aquaculture farming and improve the quality of cultivated seafoods. Using Zeolites, improve the water quality with high level of success as it has high level of Na, Ca, Mg and other cations. It also helps in removing heavy metals from the pond or fresh water lakes.

There are many factors which affects the efficiency of zeolites such as pH, temperature and initial concentration of cations. Zeolites also helps in removing ammonia, nitrite, hydrogen sulfide, heavy and organic materials from the pond. It helps in increasing the content of oxygen, pH level and the foul odor which are emitted through the fish extraction. Ammonia is also emitted from the excretion from the fish.

It the level of Zeolite is low in the pond, all the above conditions grow rapidly which negatively affect the healthy growth of the shrimp and increases the mortality ratio. Low availability of zeolite increases the suspension of organic matter which can cause stress in the pond.

For all the problems, there is one solution. With the use of External Zeolite feed additive we can increase the level of it in the water and prohibits these problems.
